It is no secret that Grameenphone is, by far, the most popular telecommunications provider in Bangladesh. Having amassed a sizeable 46.3% of the total market (as of December of 2020, that is), if you live in Bangladesh and you don’t use Grameenphone for your cell plan or as your internet service provider, well, I would be willing to wager that you probably know somebody who does!
The company skyrocketed to market dominance after becoming the first tech company to offer GSM technology in Bangladesh – a move that finally upgraded Bangladeshi cell service to the same cutting-edge standard established by most European countries. In other words, Bangladesh owes much of its current matrix of highspeed internet and cell service to Grameenphone.
If you live in Bangladesh, though, chances are, none of this is news to you. What is significantly less discussed about Grameenphone, though, is the fact that they also own and operate one of the best movie streaming sites on the web today, Bioscope. Of course, Bioscope is not some hidden gem or anything like that. There is a good chance that you have heard of and maybe even used Bioscope before.
However, in the broader global context of the movie streaming industry, Bioscope is a criminally underrated (and, to many, completely unknown) streaming service. With just a handful of premium streaming services dominating the industry today – you know, the usual suspects: Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, etc. – it can be hard for a smaller, more regionally based site like Bioscope to gain much traction abroad.
Bioscope is, nevertheless, one of the best movie streaming sites I have ever seen. It is well-designed, easy to use, mobile friendly, and offers a huge range of on-demand and live content. Plus, it offers one of the most affordable subscription fees on the market. In short, Bioscope seems as if it has just about everything I look for in a streaming site (and more).
I am typically a bit skeptical, at least at first, when I encounter a streaming service that is run and operated by an ISP or big tech company. Oftentimes these services are subpar. They frequently require their users to purchase an internet or data coverage plan. In the States, for example, there is a whole subset of TV and movie streaming sites that are owned by big tech corporations. Greedy as American companies are, they do not let people simply sign up for the streaming site; they restrict access to those who already pay for their cable or internet services.
All of this is to say that I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that anybody is able to use Bioscope, and that no additional purchases or commitments are required (other than your monthly or yearly payment) in order to become a Bioscope Prime member. What’s more,
Bioscope even lets you stream movies for free. Granted, the amount of free content is rather limited compared to the size of the library that awaits Prime members … but, still, amenities such as these are rare (to say the least) in the world of premium movie streaming sites.
Although Bioscope looks as if it might be one of the best movie streaming sites on the outset, that does not necessarily mean that it will be the best movie streaming site for you. We all have different inclinations and preferences when it comes to how we stream movies and TV, we all like different types of movies and shows, etc. The only surefire way to figure out whether this one is, indeed, the best movie streaming site for you is to take a closer look at everything Bioscope has to offer. So, allow me to take you on a comprehensive tour of one of the top movie streaming sites in Bangladesh and India!
Grameenphone was founded by entrepreneur, Iqbal Quadir with 1 simple (if challenging) goal in mind: to provide universal cellular data to all of Bangladesh, even the most rural areas. Inspired by the micro-credit model, popularized by Grameen Bank, Quadir was interested in developing a business model in which one’s mobile phone can double as a source of income.
Fired up to pursue his dream, Quadir left his life behind as an investment banker in the United States, but not before meeting with an investor and philanthropist from New York, Joshua Mailman, who helped Quadir to raise the initial funds to get started on his business. Upon returning to Bangladesh, Quadir put in 3 years of hard work, finally gaining the support of institutions like aforementioned Grameen Bank and now-partner, the Norwegian telecommunications company, Telenor.
All of Quadir’s hard work eventually paid off. Grameenphone was issued its license for cell phone operation in 1996 via the Bangladesh Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The company began operating on the 26th of March 1997 – Bangladesh’s Independence Day.
Over the course of the last 20+ years, Grameenphone has grown to become the leading cell phone provider in the country, and its Village Phone program has brought Quidar’s initial dream to fruition. But it wasn’t until 2015 that Grameenphone would launch Bioscope, strategically jumping onboard the streaming media revolution at its peak.
Bioscope offers a fairly traditional layout for a movie streaming site. There are, however, certain enhancements and flourishes in the design that make for a subtly superior user experience. When you first enter the site, it may be reminiscent of Hulu thanks to a lighter, brighter theme – a white background with green accents. The site design itself, though, is more nuanced than the average movie streaming site.
Visitors are greeted by an extra-large banner at the top of the page. Here, you will find featured and promoted movies and shows, alternating periodically. Quickly jump to one of Bioscope’s featured movies or shows or add it to your watch list if you like without having to do any browsing through the rest of the site whatsoever.
Scroll down a bit and find a menu of TV channels. Side-scroll through the complete list of live TV channels available or filter by genre thanks to a convenient row of tags just beneath. Highlighting one genre smoothly and instantaneously brings forth only channels within your selected parameter. This is exactly the kind of user-friendly and intuitive design that I expect to see from one of the best movie streaming sites in the world.
Keep scrolling down, however, and the remainder of the site takes the standard form of a typical streamer. You will find a series of horizontal, side-scrolling menus, each of which separated by category. This makes for seamless and convenient browsing and content discovery.
Content and Features
Bioscope offers 19 live TV channels, hundreds of movies, and original films and series. Whether you enjoy comedies, dramas, action flicks, classic cinema, or thrillers, Bioscope has something for everyone. The combination of live TV and movies alone is enough to put Bioscope in the running for the best movie streaming site in Bangladesh.
As far as features are concerned, once again Bioscope goes above and beyond. A lot of movie streaming sites simply let users stream movies, some allow downloads. Bioscope, however, does everything that any other site does with the addition of letting users add movies and shows to watchlists, making it as easy as it should be to keep track of your favorite movies, as well as jump straight to what you want to watch later on.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
Fans of mobile streaming will be happy to learn that Bioscope does offer mobile apps for both Android and iOS devices. The apps, too, are every bit as smooth, intuitive, and user-friendly as the desktop site is. The only downside from a compatibility standpoint is the fact that Bioscope is not yet available on other platforms, such as Roku, Android boxes, or smart TVs. In the site’s FAQ, though, they do indicate that they are currently hard at work to expand compatibility in the near future.
Pricings and Plans
For a movie streaming site that packs this much of a punch, surely it is going to put a dent in your monthly entertainment budget, right? … Wrong! I was shocked by how affordable Bioscope is, given all that it has to offer.
Pay per month if you like, and it will only cost you – get this — $2.99! Can you believe that? It becomes even cheaper, too, when you consider the fact that Bioscope’s annual plan is only $29.99. With a 7-day free trial, you really can’t go wrong with this movie streaming site.
