The world of entertainment in the 21st century does not look a thing like it did even 20 years ago. Technological advancements have completely altered the ways in which we can access the content. Once upon a time, our options were severely limited. When it came to catching a new movie, for instance, we could do one of the following: A.) go to the cinema and pay top dollar to see the film when it first came out; B.) Wait a little bit longer and either rent or buy the VHS or DVD of the movie; C.) Wait up to several years to happen upon it on television, if it ever got picked up by a network. That was about it.
Personally, I am thrilled to be alive at this time in history. The advent of streaming has completely altered and expanded the ways in which we can consume media content. Today, we can watch just about any movie we desire with nothing more than just a couple clicks of the mouse or taps on a phone screen. It’s as easy as that. For the first time since the invention of film, the consumer is in a position of control.
It used to be the case that a few film studios and TV networks dictated what we could watch when we could watch it, and where we had to be. What I mean is that, prior to streaming sites, if you wanted to watch a TV show, say, you would have to wait until its specified airtime. You would have to clear your schedule (pray that you aren’t meant to be working when it aired) in order to watch it. You had to be at a house, in front of a TV to see it. And you’d have to wait a full week before you could watch the next episode.
Today, though, thanks to all of the great streaming apps out there, this model has changed drastically. Nowadays, we can watch an entire series or seasons in one sitting. Thanks to the Netflix model of releasing original TV shows, a season at a time, we can binge our favorite shows until we pass out. And then, when we wake up, we can pick right up where we left off.
How much we are able to watch, however, is not the only thing that has been altered thanks to streaming apps. We also do not have to be rooted in one location to watch our favorite movies and shows. With streaming apps on our smartphones or tablets, we can watch whatever we want, whenever we want, wherever we want.
We are no longer tied down to the television! Watch a movie on your morning commute to work. Make that dreaded hours long red-eye much more enjoyable by streaming your favorite show. Personally, my favorite time to use streaming apps is when I’m working out. If I get sucked into a movie while I’m running on the treadmill, I can forget how much I loathe what it is that I am doing.
Streaming apps have opened up the realm of possibilities and put the viewer in control. The only problem is, well, there are so many streaming apps to choose from! It can be dizzying to try and sort through every single free streaming app on the market and try to figure out which one is quality and which one is not worth even a 10-second download, which is precisely why I made StreamingSites.
My lists and reviews of free streaming sites and premium streaming services are here to make your life easier so that you do not have to go through the lengthy and frustrating process of downloading each free streaming app and trying them out for yourself. I did all the heavy lifting already! All you have to do is browse my reviews, check out the pros and cons, and figure out in a matter of a couple of minutes which free streaming app is the perfect match.
But what makes a free streaming app better than the rest? How can you tell if a streaming app is truly right for you? Well, there are a few factors to consider. But, essentially, in my opinion, it tends to boil down to what they have to offer. Sure, other factors are arguably just as important – such as an intuitive, easy to use design, HD streaming, and availability across all of your devices – but at the end of the day, I think it’s all about content. Because let’s face it, if a streaming app does not have the movies and shows that you want to see on it, then there is no real point in streaming, to begin with! Convenience without content is just an easy way to settle.
And a lack of solid content, unfortunately, is one of the most common shortcomings when it comes to free streaming apps. Sure, the app may be free, but all too often, they don’t have a large library of movies and shows to choose from. That or the list of content that they do have is as obscure as it gets. But maybe esoteric indie films are your thing. That’s fine, too; the point is … you want a free streaming app that has the right content for you.
And that brings us to the free streaming app that we will be taking a look at today … Movies Anywhere. It has a pretty straightforward name for a streaming app; it gets right to the point. If you want to watch your favorite movies, no matter where you happen to be, this is the perfect app for you. But how do Movies Anywhere perform when setting against its competition? Well, for starters, this app is set up a little differently than a lot of free streaming apps out there. But we will get to that in a moment. For now, let’s take a look at how this app performs when it comes to all of the categories that matter.
If credibility is a concern when choosing your free streaming apps, you will be happy to learn that Movies Anywhere could not come with a better cosign. Does the name Disney ring any bells? Disney first launched Movies Anywhere on February 10th, 2014, originally as an iOS app only.
In November of the same year, however, the app expanded its horizons, gradually becoming available on more and more devices and operating systems. And, today, Movies Anywhere is one of the most popular and highly rated free streaming apps on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
Movies Anywhere has a very minimalistic and stripped-down design. Sparse might be a good word for it. This, to me, is a positive note. Instead of the cluttered and sometimes confusing navigation menus that many free streaming apps come with, Movies Anywhere splits content into two main categories at the top of the screen: My Movies and Saved Offline. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
You can also access your movies based on a few other factors. There is a Continue Watching tab, which allows you to pick right up where you left off, as well as a Watch List, which allows you to keep track of the movies that you have meant to get around to (whether or not you own them yet). The app, too, has a very smooth interface, making it easier than ever to access, download, and watch the movies you love.
Here is where Movies Anywhere gets a little sticky. It might not be completely accurate to label this app a free streaming app. I mean, sure, the app itself is free to use. You do not have to register or pay monthly subscription fees to use it. However, if you do not pay anything, you will also not have access to any titles. Instead of offering a bunch of movies for you to stream from the app, instead, Movies Anywhere provides you with a convenient all-in-one place to store and watch movies that you already have access to via renting or purchasing services. So, for instance, if you rent a movie on Prime Video and you purchase another one on the Google Play Store, Movies Anywhere will allow you to access both from this singular app.
Suggestions that I have for Movies Anywhere
Although I understand that Movies Anywhere is intentionally providing a somewhat unique take on the free streaming app, I would love to see them expand so that users can opt into being able to stream content directly from the app, instead of having to rent or purchase titles from other services. I would even be willing to pay for this feature in the future, especially considering the superior design of this app.
