The media streaming industry has never been more competitive than it is right now. When it comes to finding the best TV streaming site in 2021, the process may not be quite as easy as it was only a few years ago, back when you essentially only had to choose between Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. Today, it is as if a new major streaming service is released every other month or so. Figuring out which one is going to be the best streaming site for you can be a daunting and overwhelming task.
Have no fear, though, for I am here to try and make this decision-making process as easy as I possibly can. Firstly, by being able to access my in-depth reviews of all of the best free and premium streaming services that exist, never again do you have to visit a website or sign up for a streaming service before first knowing whether it sounds like something that is worth your time (and, potentially, your money). Beyond that, though, I am here to give you a few pointers as to how this selection process can be simplified and streamlined. Choosing a streaming site does not have to be a stressful enterprise!
First thing’s first, you are going to want to figure out whether you are interested in a free TV streaming site, or a premium one. If you have the money in your budget, perhaps it would be worth considering some of the best premium streaming sites for 2021, like HBO Max, Peacock, Apple TV, etc. However, if you decide that you aren’t in the market for a new paid subscription right now, that’s fine, too … there are plenty of free TV streaming sites that offer premium quality.
One of the most buzzworthy free movie and TV series streaming sites on the rise right now is an Indian site, known as MX Player. If this name sounds familiar, it is because up until 2018, MX Player was one of India’s most popular media player (especially for Android users). In 2021, it is still India’s most popular media player. The only difference is that it is now also India’s most popular movie and TV streaming service, too.
MX Player has undergone a series of great expansions over the last few years. In addition to increasing the breadth of their services (by building one of the best streaming services right into their acclaimed media player), in 2020, MX Player also expanded their reach significantly. Whereas the application and streaming site used to only be available to citizens of India, both products can now be enjoyed in 7 new countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Nepal, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
People in India have long since jumped ship from Netflix to MX Player as their primary streamer. In fact, in 2018, shortly after the streaming service launched, it quickly became India’s most popular streaming service, outperforming both Netflix and HotStar, amassing 175 million monthly users. And this was back when the streaming site only offered an ad-supported streaming model (today, you can opt into a premium, ad-free membership if you so desire).
This international expansion is, of course, huge news for MX Player. But do the giant streamers like Netflix and Hulu truly face a threat by MX Player abroad? Perhaps in the future, yes. As of now, though, seeing as MX Player seems to offer exclusively Indian content (although it offers content in many languages, English included), I do not foresee it threatening to take a significant number of monthly users away from Netflix. However, MX Player has reportedly reached several landmark deals with American film and TV studios; so, who knows what the future holds – the streaming service is certainly good enough to be a thorn in the side of some of the most popular streaming enterprises on the global market.
What makes MX Player so great? Well, in order to figure that out, we will have to take a close look at this freemium TV streaming site and app, take into account everything that it has to offer. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, but I do think that MX Player could have what it takes to become your new go-to free TV streaming site. Let’s dive in and see if this is the case, shall we?
Well, we already have established a little bit regarding where MX Player came from and how it became the most popular streaming service in India. As I mentioned earlier, MX Player established itself as the premiere media player app in India, known for its ability to play all file types (think something like an Indian VLC). The platform was developed by MX Media & Entertainment (formerly known as J2 Interactive).
The expansion of the media player into the streaming space came to be upon a seemingly fortuitous acquisition. India’s largest digital products company, Times Internet purchased a majority stake in MX Player in 2018. This acquisition reportedly cost them (Times Internet) a cool $140 million. In October of 2019, even more money was flooded into this enterprise. MX Player raised an additional $110.8 million thanks to an investment on behalf of a Chinese conglomerate known as Tencent.
As of today, MX Player boasts over 280 million active monthly users around the globe, has a library of over 150,000 hours of content across 12 languages, and can be accessed as in iOS app, an Android app, or, of course, as a browser site on any device connected to the internet.
I wonder if the creators of MX Player dreamt of all this when they launched their video player on July 18th, 2011.
MX Player offers a very intuitive, dynamic, and smooth design. This site, although newer, offers the user experience of a well-established, veteran web presence. From the moment you visit MX Player’s home page, the site makes a good first impression. The first thing I notice is an extra-large banner at the top of the page, alternating featured titles and suggestions. Below that, the site continues much in the iconic movie streamer style that was popularized by Netflix.
You’ll find several slim sections, separated by category and/or genre. Each section offers a side-scroll for easy browsing without back and forward clicking from page to page. Browse, for instance, movies and TV shows by Must Watch Shows, MX Original Web Shows, Best Shows on MX, Blockbuster Movies, and so on.
One thing that I really love about the design of MX is how customizable the site is. Prefer to browse titles in dark mode? No problem … do so with the click of a button (for which you will automatically be prompted). Also, translate the entirety of the site to your preferred language(s) quickly and easily from an intuitive dropdown menu. Set as many as you like with the click of a button.
Content and Features
In addition to these customizations to the site, MX Player also offers an extremely user-friendly watchlist. Add any TV series, episode, or movie to your watchlist by merely clicking the “add” icon in the top-right of any thumbnail. Furthermore, your watchlist can be accessed without leaving whatever page of the site you happen to be on. Your watchlist is permanently embedded into the site menu bar – click it and choose a title from your dropdown list in seconds.
Furthermore, MX Player offers one of the largest libraries of content types that I have ever seen on a free TV streaming site. In addition to hundreds of thousands of hours of on-demand content, MX Player also provides tons of live TV channels. So, not only is MX Player one of the best free TV and movie streaming sites on the web, in terms on on-demand sites, but it is also one of the best free live TV streaming sites, too.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
How, then, is this site able to provide so much content for free? Well, it does so by providing ad-supported viewing. No matter where you are, on what device you are streaming, or what you are watching, MX Player’s content will be interrupted with ads. That being said, this is a small price to pay for the amazing desktop and mobile experience that this site offers. Enjoy MX Player on either iOS or Android devices – both apps are incredibly smooth and user-friendly.
