Movie streaming sites are known for being many things – convenient, entertaining, competitive – but one word that seldom gets applied to them is “controversial.” Well, today all that is about to change, thanks to the Indian movie streaming site, Ullu. And no, the controversy does not stem from the fact that this infamous Indian streamer’s name is so similar to one of the most popular streaming services on the market today, Hulu … it is much juicier than a potential case of copyright infringement.

Or should I say it is much steamier? Do I have your full attention now? That’s right, there is a good chance that Ullu might just be the raunchiest premium streaming site on the web today (well, assuming that we aren’t counting sites like Porn Hub in this category, that is).

Ullu has been accused of 2 sins, according to critics. The first has to do with the nature of some of Ullu’s content. Although it is not pornographic, per se, at least not in the most explicit sense of the term, some of it is fairly close. Softcore porn, it could be called. You know, the kind of stuff that you used to sneak-watch late at night as a kid on “Skinemax.” Nudity, sure. Sex scenes, definitely. But you won’t find anything nearly as intense (or hardcore, as it were) on Ullu that you would see on a typical porn site.

Nevertheless, a certain portion of Ullu viewers felt it was inappropriate for Ullu to begin pivoting to producing content of a more adult nature, citing the fact that this shift seemed to align with COVID quarantine orders. This line of reasoning appears to be rooted in a concern that Ullu sought to exploit a newfound sense of loneliness. Then, of course, there is the fact that, generally speaking, movie streaming sites like this one are expected to at least be somewhat family friendly.

The other reason for the controversy has more to do with what Ullu has not done, as opposed to what they have. Also born of the more erotic nature of Ullu’s recent original content, the movie streaming site has been accused of inaction in the face of piracy. More specifically, scenes from Ullu movies started finding their ways onto popular porn sites.

In 2019, for instance, the makers of an original Ullu series called D-Code accused Ullu of refusing to assert their copyrights and fight piracy when intimate scenes from the series wound up on several porn sites for free. Kajal Shankawar, who worked on the series, even went as far as to say, “This is on-screen molestation” in response to the scenes being ripped, edited, and used out of context as material on pornographic websites.

Given all of this, depending on your personal ethics and stance on adult content, perhaps Ullu may not be the best movie streaming site for you. For the rest of us, though, there is a lot to love

about Ullu. Even if you are indifferent to erotic content … it’s not as if that is all there is to stream on Ullu. There are also plenty of more vanilla dramas, comedies, documentaries, and more available on this streaming site. And it is far from a sketchy or skeevy softcore porn site. Ullu is, in every measurable way, a formidable and legitimate streamer – one that, I dare say, has every right to be included here, on this list of the best movie streaming sites on the web.

But it can be hard to tell from the outside looking in whether a given movie streaming site is going to be right for you. We all have different sensibilities, different web design and interface preferences, different monthly budgets, and so on. This is why I have taken the time to pull the curtain back in order to give you a comprehensive tour of what might be the most controversial movie streaming sites in the world, even if it isn’t always the most ideal for the family room TV. Allow me to introduce you to Ullu.

Design

For all of the controversy surrounding Ullu, there is certainly nothing to find offensive in its site design. This is a movie streaming site that does not veer too far away from the common tropes of movie streaming site design. Anybody who has used Netflix, Hulu, or the like should immediately be able to navigate and make the most of this site, no problem.

When you first land on the Ullu homepage, you will be greeted, as is often the case with sites like these, by an extra-large banner. Here, featured titles will carousal, hoping to entice you with high-res movie posters whatever titles the site is promoting at the time.

Below this – maybe you can already guess what’s coming next – is a series of horizontally fixated menus separated by category. Each of these comes with an intuitive and convenient side-scrolling function for quick and handy browsing and content discovery. Uncover everything that this movie streaming site has to offer by looking through Movies, Series, Ullu originals, songs, web series, short films, and more. One thing that is unique about this element of Ullu, though, is the fact that, being an Indian movie streaming site, there are also categories in which you can browse by region – a nice touch, indeed, for a more localized and personalized experience.

Content and Features

As I have already covered rather extensively, Ullu offers something a bit different from most movie streaming sites in terms of its content. A great deal of what is available here does skew towards the R-rated, or NC-17 (by my approximation). Just to reiterate, however, there is no actual pornography here, even though the level of controversy behind this movie streaming site might lead you to believe otherwise. Nevertheless, Ullu is definitely not a family-oriented movie streaming site by any means either.

In fact, it is the uniqueness of Ullu’s content that is, I think, its greatest strength. Think of all of the best movie streaming sites … what do they all have in common? One of those things is surely that they all provide a wealth of high-quality and unique original content, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else, right? Well, Ullu certainly has that box ticked, offering a sprawling list of original series and a growing roster of original movies and short films.

Ullu also doesn’t just stop at movies and TV/web series. This streaming site also prioritizes music, dedicating a whole section to music videos for songs from their productions. You’ll also find a level of behind-the-scenes footage on Ullu that is unparalleled by even the best movie streaming site you can think of. The end result, I think, is a much more intimate user experience (in more ways than one … wink, wink).

Mobile and Desktop Experience

Ullu can be enjoyed on your desktop computer, your smartphone, or your tablet. There are dedicated mobile apps available for both iOS and Android devices. The apps are every bit as user-friendly and sleek as the desktop site, resulting in a great mobile streaming experience no matter where you are.

In case you are a ratings junky, the iOS app has an average user rating of 3.7 (out of 5), and the Android app scores a 3.9 (also out of 5). The apps are not the highest-rated movie streaming apps on the App Store or Google Play, but this is largely due to bugs and glitches on earlier versions, which have since been eliminated according to Ullu.

Pricings and Plans

To add to the list of things that I love about this movie streaming site, it is also one of the most affordable streamers on the market today. Just because a site is one of the best movie streaming sites doesn’t mean that you have to pay a premium price for it. Ullu Prime members can enjoy unlimited HD streaming, downloads, and exclusive regional content for only $5.99 per month. Or, if you really want a deep discount, simply subscribe for the year and only pay $27!
