If you are sick and tired of the same old movie review sites (yeah, I’m looking at you IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes), and have been looking for an online community of fellow movie lovers, Movie Meter might be just what the doctor ordered. Offering an enormous list of movies, TV series, user reviews, ratings, and news, Movie Meter is quickly becoming known as one of the best movie review sites in the world – for both Dutch and international movies alike.
As of the time of this review, Movie Meter’s database includes 139,083 movies; 6,444 TV series; 19,587 seasons; 426,559 actors and actresses; 270,526 users; and 8,051,180 votes/movie ratings. The best part of Movie Meter, though, is that this site is alive – it is growing and expanding all the time thanks to its active and knowledgeable community base. When it comes to movie review sites, few are better than Movie Meter when it comes to providing a sense of community.
Either find your favorite movie or show, read up about your favorite actor, browse one of Movie Meter’s many ‘top lists,’ find out where to stream a movie or series, add titles to your watch list, review films, rate movies, or participate in in-depth discussions on the site’s forum. No matter what way you slice it, Movie Meter is not only one of the best movie review sites on the web, it is also one of the most versatile and features-rich.
But don’t just take my word for it … the only way to know for sure whether Movie Meter is, in fact, the best movie review site for you is to take a closer look at the site itself and everything that it has to offer. So, let’s get right to the thick of it, shall we? Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to your new favorite Dutch movie review site, Movie Meter.
Movie Meter offers a site design that is ideal for browsing – an all too rare feature of even the best movie review sites. Maybe it’s just me, but Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb both, for instance, do not provide a particularly great way to browse movie reviews and articles. These sites are really the most effective when you have a movie, show, or actor in mind that you want to search for specifically. Movie Meter, however, provides a delightful user experience.
The site is inviting, intuitive, and sharp. Honestly, it provides the kind of site design that makes me want to stay on a site for hours. And I could, easily, with Movie Meter. I think this might have something to do with the fact that Movie Meter hasn’t succumbed to the typical movie review site design. If anything, this site looks more like an entertainment news site – a classy one, at that.
Movie Meter makes excellent use of page space, but not in a minimalistic way or anything. There is actually quite a bit of content on the page at one time, but it is all so well organized that nothing feels as if it is competing for your attention. Everything has its place, and every section of the page is clearly labeled and logical, resulting in a very scrollable user experience.
When you first land on the homepage, you will be greeted by featured news about upcoming movies or favorite actors/directors. This is what caught my eye first anyway. Just above this, you will find a handy site menu bar, making it as easy and simple as it should be to find precisely what you want on Movie Meter. Choose between news, movies, series, cast & crew, TV, cinema, on demand, buy it, forum, and updates. Each choice, too, comes with a helpful and dynamic dropdown menu in case you want to get even more specific.
To the right of the central news section of the homepage, you will find a self-contained list of what’s new on demand. This allows users to quickly discover the hottest movies and series on the best streaming services on the market, like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, etc. Keep scrolling down to find another self-contained list of what’s new on sale, a side-scrolling menu of popular actors, a “latest trailers” section, and a little feed offering up the site’s latest user reviews.
Clicking into a movie page will present an equally well-designed and nicely organized info page. Here, you will find all of the information on a movie that you could find on any of the best movie review sites, trailers, ratings, and more. Each movie page (and actor/cast/crew page, by the way) is very nicely presented, too, with a banner at the top, profile image, and menu, which makes it super-easy to toggle between movie info, stats, cast & crew listings, voting, filmography, and more. Handily jump between actors, movies, directors, etc. as well, thanks to a meticulously organized tagging system and recommendations of related movies, series, actors, and so on.
Content and Features
Honestly, what movie review site features does Movie Meter not provide its users? This is, as far as I can tell, a fairly comprehensive movie review site. Anything that can be done on the best movie review sites and movie rating sites like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes can be done on Movie Meter. As we already covered, you can discover, browse, and organize your favorite movies, series, actors, directors, and other cast members … but this is a given; this is just the baseline of how Movie Meter functions as a movie database. There is much more to it as well.
Obviously, too, Movie Meter allows users to rate and review movies. This works by users voting on titles, scoring movies and series out of 5 stars. The average rating, then, becomes the official Movie Meter rating. Furthermore, every user on Movie Meter can write reviews to go along with their rating if they so desire. These reviews, though, are left via comments on the movie or series’ page. Therefore, other users can reply to your review, making for a very interactive and robust community of movie lovers.
Movie Meter is many things. In addition to a comprehensive movie and TV database, it also has a regularly updated news section, too, where you can be sure to stay up to date with all of your favorite actors and upcoming movies/series that you can’t wait to see. One thing that Movie Meter does an exceptional job at, too, is keeping its members in the loop about when shows or movies are airing on TV, when movies are being released in the cinema, and other time-sensitive viewing matters. Thanks to this movie review site and movie database, you will never be in the dark about where or how to watch something again.
The same is true when it comes to keeping track of what you can stream and where. Thanks to Movie Meter’s on demand section, you can keep tabs on what is available on your regional Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney Plus library (as well as what’s to be added to soon). The same is true of movies and series that can be purchased. Movie Meter has a great database of for-sale movies, along with links to purchase them. All of this information, too, is conveniently located on each movie’s profile page.
Add to this an active and interesting forum of fellow movie lovers, a great online community, and a beautifully organized database of Dutch and international movies and series, and you have the recipe for one of the best movie review sites not only in the Netherlands, but in the whole world.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
Unfortunately, there is not a mobile app currently available for Movie Meter. That being said, the mobile site is perfectly optimized and retrofitted for smaller screens. You should have no trouble whatsoever loading and enjoying Movie Meter on your phone or tablet’s web browser. There may be a few ads, but that is to be expected. They aren’t bad enough to ruin the experience, in my opinion.
