Maybe this goes without saying, but I would like to take a moment out of the day to acknowledge just how lucky we are to be able to have so many high-quality movies and TV shows available at our fingertips, any second of the day, any day of the week. Never before have we been able to view so much great content on command. It is nearly impossible to be bored in 2020. If you ever find yourself with nothing better to do, just throw on your streaming service of choice and sit back for hours of entertainment. Sometimes you just have to appreciate how fortunate you are.
Most of us have a subscription (or at the very least a friend or family member’s login information) to one of the mainstreaming platforms out there today. Yes, I’m talking about the usual suspects: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO (Go or Max), etc. Maybe you’re even lucky enough to have access to most or all of the above. If so, there’s a good chance that you are ever in a situation where you are unable to find something that you can at least get in the mood to watch, even if it isn’t necessarily what you had in mind. Anyone of those streaming services will be able to offer a little bit of something for everyone. But, then again, sometimes you still have to settle when your subscriptions are not featuring precisely what it is that you’re looking for.
And, even still, there are some movies that are not available on any of the streaming services (if you can believe that). What, then, are you supposed to do? Well, one option, of course, is that you could always purchase or rent a digital stream of the movie in question. Amazon Prime Video is always a good source if you want to go in this direction. However, we don’t all have the extra money to pay for the movies or shows that we want to watch.
If that applies to you, does that mean that you just have to wait until the movie or show that your craving happens to finally be featured on one of the streaming services that you have access to? Well, fortunately, not necessarily. Truth be told, thanks to the nearly infinite possibilities of the internet, if you are willing to do just a little bit of digging, you can find just about any movie or show available for free streaming. You just have to know where to go.
Perhaps you have already discovered some of the free movie and TV streaming services that have existed online over the years. Unfortunately, many of these sites get shut down eventually due to copyright laws, so, in order to continue to be able to stream any movie or show you want for free, you have to stay in the loop with which sites are functional at the moment. And, of course, some of these free streaming sites are more dependable (and safer) than others.
On that note, good antivirus software, adblocker extensions, and a solid VPN are all extremely wise tools to have on your side when you do anything on the internet, but especially when you are browsing some of these free streaming options – just a side note to ensure that whatever you’re doing online, you can do so with topnotch privacy, anonymity, and safety. There are a lot of “free movie streaming sites” that are not exactly reputable. Some of them are, in fact, shell sites meant to infect your computer with viruses, others want to merely get your credit card information, and others still are so riddled with ads that you won’t even be able to enjoy the content that they let you access.
Which brings us to the site of the day: 1Movies. Where does 1 Movies fall on this spectrum of free movie streaming sites, from worst to best? Is it safe to use? What do you need to know about it before visiting? Well, let’s delve in and take a look, shall we? Because if, in fact, 1Movies delivers on its promises, it could just become your new go-to source for free movie and TV show streaming with no strings attached.
Many of these free movie streaming sites are intentionally kept under wraps. And that is for a good reason. There is somewhat of a paradox to sites like this. They want to be well known enough for people to hear about and make use of, sure, but they also don’t want to become so popular that they end up getting shut down like so many of these sorts of sites before them (see Putlocker). Therefore, unfortunately, there is not a whole lot of information available on where 1Movies came from, when it launched, or who the masterminds behind this somewhat subversive site are.
But when it comes to sites like 1Movies – which is actually short for the site’s full name, Number 1 Movies – the past is not nearly as important as the present and the future. When it comes to choosing a solid free movie streaming site, what matters most is whether it is working currently, as well as whether it seems to be a stable enough site to continue being operative in the near future. And the good news about 1Movies is that, sure enough, it ticks both of those boxes. So, this site is, indeed, looking to be off to a great start.
One of the reasons that I think 1Movies stands a good chance of staying afloat for the foreseeable future is the fact that it is designed well. A lot of these sorts of sites are sloppy, amateurish looking, and highly dysfunctional. However, 1Movies looks like a trustworthy site. It doesn’t look like some of the kind of shady, legally questionable competitor sites in this category. It has a professional feel to it, one that makes you feel safe browsing its enormous catalog of movies and TV shows.
When you land on 1Movies, you’ll be greeted by a cool white and baby blue theme. The background is white, which gives the site a feeling of space, a nice minimalist appeal to it. This space is sparsely filled by baby blue accents, found in the site menu bar and key buttons on the home page (which is little more than a search bar and site menu separated by content categories).
Below the search bar, you will also find a button that reads, “want to use the old #1 Movies Site?” Clicking this transforms the site into a different (but equally high-quality) layout. This version of the site is more focused on immediately browsing the content, with banners advertising featured titles and the ability to browse by genre in the style of Netflix. Either way, I think you’ll be pleased with this site’s user experience.
1 Movies offers, as the site’s name suggests, plenty of free streaming movies. But that is not all. The site also lets you browse titles by TV Series, TV Shows (episodes), Genres, Top Watched, Latest, and Top IMDB. Seldom does a free streaming site like this offer so many different ways to peruse the content it offers. And I love how well organized and easy to browse 1Movies is.
Another winning factor for this site when it comes to content is the fact that it features films that are still in theaters. And many of these titles are, surprisingly, not camcorder recorded but high-quality (bootleg) copies. Plus, 1Movies is constantly being updated, which means that if a new episode of your favorite show aired last night, you will probably be able to stream it today (if not within a couple of hours of airing).
Desktop and Mobile Experience
Where the site starts to falter is in the actual experience of the site, though. There are plenty of ads to contend with. Clicking play on a title, for instance, will give you popups a couple times before the content will begin to play (desktop) and as far as streaming on your phone is concerned, forget about it – you will just be brought to the app store to download a VPN.
Pricing and Plans
1Movies is a freemium site. View any movie or show for free, but at a lower resolution. If you want unlimited HD streaming with no ads, however, you can upgrade to premium. It will cost $5 for a month; $13 for 3 months; $25 for 6 months; or $45 for a year.
